About Us

Ikuna Koa currently maintains four outrigger canoes, which are kept at the San Diego Mission Bay Boat & Ski Club, a non profit 501C-7 organization where Ikuna Koa operates under the Boat Club Athletic Association founded in 2003.

Our team is experiencing terrific growth and have about 75 members this year, all of whom blend together to create a fun, cohesive and competitive team. We are very excited about the season and are expecting to do well.  Our racing season begins in May and extends through September.  Ikuna Koa’s goal is to participate in 12 SCORA sanctioned races from San Diego to Santa Barbara and take several teams to Kailua Kona, Hawaii for the Queen Lili‘uokalani regatta, the largest outrigger canoe race in the world.  These races attract world wide participation and media.

Community Service

While racing is exciting, it is only one facet of our club.  We are also very active in giving back to the community as Ikuna Koa follows the Hawaiian traditions of aloha, respect and loyalty.

Members from Ikuna Koa Outrigger Canoe Club joined together with the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation to start the first ever Southern California Adaptive Paddler Program for disabled military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Working closely with Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, this program has become a great success as part of the rehabilitation process for our vets.

Each year we produce an event at their annual picnic, taking kids with Spina Bifida and their families our for a paddle. The smiles and laughs are priceless.

Each year we help with the blind ski program which takes sight impaired kids and adults water skiing, and then celebrate with a luncheon feast.

Each year we host an informational booth and give rides to attendees, introducing them to the sport of outrigger.

Supporting the Hawaiian community in SD, we paddle the Kahuna up to the opening ceremony for the blessing of the annual event.
