E ala e, ka lâ i ka hikina,                     Awaken the sun in the east,
I ka moana, ka moana hohonu,        from the ocean, the ocean deep,
Pi`i ka lewa, ka lewa nu`u,               climbing (to) the heaven, the heaven
I ka hikina, aia ka lâ, e ala e!            highest, in the east, there is the sun, awaken!

Ke lei mail la, ‘o kaula i ke kai e                  
Ka-ula wears the ocean as a wreath;
Ke malamamalma ‘o Ni’ihau, ua malie      
Nii-hau shines forth in the calm.
A malie pa, ka inuwai                                    
After the calm blows the wind Inu-wai;
Ke inu maila na, hala o Naue i ke kai           Naue's palms then drink in the salt.
No Naue, ka hala, no Puna ka wahine         5 From Naue the palm, from Puna
